Kidney failure is treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD), a procedure that cleans the blood. It makes use of a unique solution and the peritoneal membrane, the lining of your abdomen (dialysate). Every day, the solution needs to be modified several times. You can include this in your daily routine at home or at work. Or a machine could complete it overnight. Through a plastic tube, a dialysis solution is injected into your abdomen (catheter). Your abdomen is surgically inserted with this catheter. It takes the catheter site 2 to 4 weeks to heal before you can use it. Your doctor might advise having this catheter installed before your kidneys completely stop working. Through the catheter, dialysate is injected into the abdomen and allowed to dwell there for four to six hours. After that, the membrane and dialysate work to purify the blood. Every few hours, the dialysate needs to be changed. This is called an exchange. In each exchange, 2 to 3 liters of liquid are used.
