It utilizes a special solution and your peritoneal membrane, which lines your abdomen (dialysate). The answer needs to be changed several times each day. This can be incorporated into your regular schedule at home or at the office. Or a machine could finish it in a single night. Your abdomen receives an injection of a dialysis solution through a plastic tube (catheter). This catheter is surgically inserted into your abdomen. Before using the catheter, the catheter site needs two to four weeks to heal. The placement of this catheter might be advised by your doctor before your kidneys completely stop functioning. Dialysate is injected into the abdomen through the catheter and allowed to stay there for four to six hours. The membrane and dialysate then work to clean the blood. The dialysate needs to be changed every few hours. We refer to this as an exchange. 2 to 3 liters of liquid are used for each exchange.
